The offshore oil and gas sector have explored what makes some teams special and whether the nature of the 'specialness' or 'Magic' could be captured in the language of competence and performance indicators.
Zestco has developed this concept to more fully understand the 'magic' of the deep motivations that drive excellence over and above ability

Ability modelling techniques presuppose that all experience has structure. Our research in safety leadership concurs with this and we have found that values, beliefs and emotions support the strategies and behaviours observable in ability.
Zestco has developed these techniques, originally designed for individuals, to explore and give structure and form to the excellence of teams….
We have found three categories of ability:
- Delivery – models what the team is employed to do
- Effectiveness – models about things the team applies itself to its service of exceptional delivery
- Cohesiveness – models about how the team operates as a community
Team Magic in practice
With dynamic exercises we work with the models as examples – not rules. They are not the way 'it' should be done; rather they show a group that is good at 'it' does 'it'. They are not a manual of how to….”, rathr a provocation to think. “What would it be like if we did….”
